A seven-day loop through the Khasi and Jaintia hills, built around three unhurried nights in Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. You start with Umiam Lake and the Laitlum canyon, drop into the caves of Mawsynram and the split rock at Mawlyngbna, then give Cherrapunji the time it actually deserves: Nohkalikai, the Garden of Caves and the Seven Sisters on one day, and the offbeat side on the next, the Umkar living root bridge, Wei Sawdong down its bamboo ladder, and a run of waterfalls most itineraries skip entirely. From there it is the falls around Jowai, then Asia's cleanest village at Mawlynnong, the Riwai root bridge, and the turquoise pools of Krangsuri. Late August into September is the sweet spot. The monsoon has done its work, the hills are impossibly green, and every waterfall on the route is at full flow.
