Eighty kilometres north, for one hour of light
The White Rann is a salt flat the size of a small country, and for most of the year it is either underwater or too hot to stand on. In winter it dries to a hard white crust with nothing on it, and at sunset the whole thing goes pink and then blue while the horizon disappears. It is worth the drive and it is worth timing properly, because at two in the afternoon it is a glaring white field.
Getting there is 80 km north of Bhuj on the Khavda road, through villages of round painted bhunga huts where embroidery, bell metal and lacquer work are still household trades. Then a checkpost, because the Rann is a border area and every visitor needs a permit written against their ID before the road goes any further.
This booking runs the whole thing backwards from sunset: out at one, a craft village on the way, the permit sorted at Bhirandiyara while you have a tea, and two hours on the salt through the best light of the day. Around full moon nights in the Rann Utsav season the flat stays lit long after dark, and if your date falls there your driver will wait. You book the car, so the price holds for two of you or four.

There is a permit and a checkpost
The White Rann is a border area. Every visitor is written onto a permit against original ID at the checkpost before Dhordo. Your driver knows the process and does it while you are having tea, rather than you learning it at a counter.
Timing decides whether it was worth it
Midday on the salt is a white glare. The last ninety minutes of light is what people fly to Kutch for. The one o'clock start exists for that and nothing else.
Nothing runs back after dark
There is no transport on the Khavda road once the sun is down. A car that waits and drives you the 80 km home is the difference between a sunset and a problem.

1. North out of Bhuj
About 80 km up the Khavda road through flat scrub that gets emptier by the kilometre. It is a straight, easy drive and the landscape doing less and less is part of the effect.
2. A craft village on the way
Round bhunga huts with painted mud walls, and households doing embroidery, bell metal or lacquer work depending on the village. You buy from the maker or you do not, and nobody pushes.

How you get there

About 160 km return on a straight, well surfaced desert highway. The vehicle, the driver, the fuel and the wait through sunset are one flat price for the car. The checkpost charges its own fees and you pay those there.

Who this suits
Anyone. The salt is flat and firm in season and there is no climbing involved, so this is one of the easier days on the site for older travellers and small children alike. It is a late finish, around nine, which is worth knowing if you have an early train. Bring original photo ID for every passenger, including children, or the checkpost will not write the permit. Four seats, one flat price.
What to bring
Original photo ID for every passenger, sunglasses and sunblock for the glare off the salt, a layer for after dark because the desert cools fast, and cash for the checkpost and the camel cart.
The Rann is not open all year
From roughly June to October the flat is under monsoon water and the White Rann is closed to visitors. Outside that, a dust storm or a security closure at the checkpost can shut the road at short notice. If the Rann is not accessible on your date we tell you before pickup and you take a full refund or a free reschedule. We will not drive you 80 km to a closed barrier.

Safety and the operator
Licensed local ground operator, one driver per vehicle, and the return leg is on a main highway rather than across open desert. The White Rann is a border area under security control: carry original ID, stay within the marked visitor area at Dhordo, and follow instructions at the checkpost without argument. Do not walk out onto the salt beyond the marked zone in the dark, however solid it looks.

Is the price per person?
No. One flat price for the car for the whole afternoon and evening, whether there are two of you or four.
Do we need a permit, and is it included?
Yes, a permit is required and it is written at the checkpost before Dhordo against every passenger's original ID. Your driver handles the process for you, which is included. The charges the checkpost levies are not, and you pay them there.
When is the White Rann actually white?
Roughly November to February is the reliable window, when the flat has dried hard and the weather is bearable. In the monsoon months it is under water and closed. If your date sits at the edge of the season, ask us on WhatsApp before booking and we will tell you honestly.
What about the full moon nights?
Around full moon in the Rann Utsav season the salt stays lit well after dark and it is the best version of this. Tell us at checkout if your date is near one and your driver will build in the extra wait.
Is the tent city or Rann Utsav included?
No. This is a day out that ends back at your stay in Bhuj. The tent city is its own arrangement and better booked directly.
