The lake everyone comes for, done properly in a day
Pangong sits about 220 km from Leh, over Chang La at roughly 17,500 ft, and the road is the experience as much as the water is. You cross high desert, a pass with snow on it in June, and then drop to a lake whose colour changes while you stand looking at it.
As a day out it is entirely doable and entirely unforgiving of a late start. It is 14 hours door to door, the permit has to exist before you leave Leh, and the pass has to be crossed both ways in daylight. People who set off at eight get to the lake in flat midday light and drive the return leg in the dark.
This booking is the disciplined version. Pickup at five, permit already applied for in your name, a driver who has crossed Chang La several hundred times, roughly two hours at the water, and the wheels turning back by mid afternoon. You book the vehicle for your group, so two of you and six of you pay the same.
Why not just find a car in Leh
The permit is not a formality
Pangong sits inside the inner line, and the checkpost at Tangtse turns back anyone without a permit naming them. Yours is applied for in advance from your ID details, so the checkpost is a stamp rather than a lost day.
Leh runs on a local taxi union
Outside vehicles and most rentals are not permitted on these routes, and the union rate card is fixed. Booking here gives you a registered local SUV at a price agreed now, not one you negotiate at 5 am.
The timing is the whole trip
Leave late and you get harsh light at the lake and Chang La after dark. The 5 am start and the mid afternoon turnaround are the entire design of this day.
Where you'll go
1. Out of Leh, up the Indus
Away before five, along the Indus and up through Karu while the valley is still cold and blue. The early hour is not for the view, it is to get you back before dark.
2. Chang La
One of the highest motorable passes anywhere, at around 17,500 ft. You stop briefly, and briefly is the correct amount: this is not the altitude to linger at with a headache.
3. Tangtse and the permit check
The inner line permit is checked here. Yours is arranged before you leave Leh, so this is a stop and a stamp rather than an afternoon lost.
4. Pangong Lake
The colour is the point, and it changes hour by hour with the light. You get roughly two hours on the shore, which is longer than most day runs manage.

5. The drive back over Chang La
The same pass in different light. Your driver leaves the lake by mid afternoon because the pass is not a place to be after dark, and that timing is not negotiable.
How you get there
SUV only, and that is not an upsell
There is no sedan option on this route because there is no sedan that should attempt Chang La. You book a registered local SUV with a driver for the whole day, flat for the vehicle, whether there are two of you in it or six.

Who this suits
Anyone already acclimatised to Leh, which in practice means you have been in Ladakh at least two full days. Not suitable straight off the flight, and not suitable if you have a heart or lung condition, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or are pregnant. Children over 8 who have acclimatised manage it. The vehicle takes six at one flat price.
What to bring
Original photo ID for every passenger, a proper warm layer even in July, sunglasses, sunblock, lip balm, and more water than you think. Cash for permit counters, which do not always have a working card machine.
If Chang La closes
Snow, landslide or an army convoy can close the pass at short notice, sometimes on the morning itself. If the route is shut we tell you as soon as we know and you take a full refund or a free reschedule. You are never charged for a day that did not run.

Safety and the operator
Run by a licensed local ground operator with vehicles registered for these routes. An oxygen cylinder travels in the car and drivers are trained to turn back if a passenger deteriorates, which is a decision that is theirs to make. Acclimatise in Leh for at least two days before booking this. Altitude sickness is common here and is not something to push through.
Questions
Is the price per person?
No. It is the price of the SUV for the whole day. Six of you pay ₹5,500 between you, not each.
Do we need a permit, and who arranges it?
Yes. Pangong is inside the inner line and the checkpost at Tangtse turns back anyone not named on a valid permit. We apply for it in advance from the ID details you give at checkout, so send them accurately. The government fees are paid at the counter on the day.
Can foreign passport holders do this?
Yes, but the paperwork is a protected area permit rather than the inner line permit Indian nationals get, it takes longer, and it cannot be arranged at short notice. Tell us at checkout and we will confirm on WhatsApp whether your date is workable before we take it.
Can we stay the night at Pangong instead?
Not on this booking. Every experience here is one day out and back. Camps at the lake are a separate arrangement and we would rather you booked them directly than through a day rate.
Is one day at Pangong too rushed?
It is a long day and we would not pretend otherwise. You get about two hours at the water, which is the same as most two-day itineraries give you, without the night at 14,000 ft that a lot of people sleep badly through.
