The best sunrise in Coorg, and the hardest one to reach
Mandalpatti at first light is the picture people come to Coorg for: a bare grass ridge above a sea of cloud, with the Western Ghats stacked behind it in layers. It lasts about forty minutes, and it only happens if you are standing on the ridge before the sun is, which means being through the forest checkpost by half past five.
That is the hard part. The last 8 km is a broken track that private cars are not allowed past, and the jeeps waiting at the gate quote per seat, per morning, to whoever turns up. Most visitors either arrive too late for the light or spend the darkest hour of the day negotiating.
This booking removes all of it. You book the vehicle for your group, not a seat: it collects you from your stay while Madikeri is still asleep, your entry is already arranged, and your driver knows which of the three viewpoints will be clear on the day. On the way down you stop at a working coffee estate for a filter coffee that tastes better at 8 am than it ever will again.

How you get there
Mandalpatti is jeep-only past the gate
The forest checkpost at Mandalpatti allows registered jeeps only. A self-driven car or a regular taxi is turned back, and jeeps waiting there quote per seat on the morning. You book the whole vehicle here: it runs the road legs from your stay, and past the checkpost a registered jeep of the same capacity takes over, included at no extra cost.

Who this suits
Anyone comfortable on a bumpy 20-minute climb. Children over 6 are fine with an adult. Not suitable if you have a back or neck condition, or are more than 6 months pregnant. The vehicle seats four, six or eight depending on which you pick, at the same price either way.
What to bring
A warm layer, closed shoes, a torch, and your booking reference. Carry a little cash for breakfast and for a camera fee if you are shooting with serious kit.
If the weather closes the route
The forest department shuts the track in heavy rain, and we make the call by 9 pm the night before. You choose a full refund or a free reschedule. You are never charged for a morning that did not run.

Safety and the operator
Run by a licensed local ground operator we have travelled with ourselves. Jeeps are registered for the Mandalpatti route and inspected annually. One driver per vehicle, maximum 6 guests. A GoExplorer number is on your confirmation for the whole morning.
Questions
Is the price per person?
No, it is the price of the vehicle for the whole morning. Four of you in a Dzire pay what one person would, and nobody is quoting you a seat rate at the gate in the dark.
Can I drive up myself?
No. The checkpost only admits registered jeeps. Cars are turned back.
Is the vehicle ours alone?
Yes. You have booked the whole car, and the jeep that takes over past the checkpost carries only your group.
What if I am staying outside Madikeri?
Tell us at checkout. Pickups within 15 km are free, beyond that we will confirm a small addition.
