Things to do in Mahabaleshwar
The Sahyadri plateau above the Konkan with two days in it: the points, the temples and Venna Lake, then Pratapgad fort and Panchgani's Table Land.
Getting around Mahabaleshwar
There is no ride-hailing to speak of on the plateau. The viewpoints are spread in every direction from the market on two-lane roads, each with its own crowded car park, and a Mumbai or Pune weekend turns the short hops into queues. Pratapgad is 24 km west down a ghat and Panchgani 20 km east. Every experience below includes the vehicle, a local driver and the parking.
Experiences
- Mahabaleshwar's points, Old Mahabaleshwar and Venna Lake: The source of the Krishna, the drop at Arthur's Seat, the lake, and sunset at Bombay Point
- Pratapgad Fort and Panchgani's Table Land: Shivaji's fort down the Ambenali ghat in the morning, Panchgani's plateau in the afternoon
Best months
October to May. June to September brings some of the heaviest rain in Maharashtra and the views are often in cloud; strawberries are in season through the winter.
Getting there
About 3 hrs by road from Pune and 6 hrs from Mumbai, via Wai and Panchgani. Pune has the nearest major airport; Satara is the nearest useful railhead, about 1.5 hrs below the plateau.
