A fort big enough that you need the car inside it

Chittorgarh is about 115 km from Udaipur, a straightforward two hours or so on the highway. The fort sits on a long plateau above the town, and it is enormous: palaces, towers, temples and tanks spread over several kilometres of hilltop, with a road that loops around the inside of the walls.

That loop is the reason for the car. The monuments are too far apart to walk comfortably in the heat, and the autos that wait at the gate run their own circuit at their own pace. With your own vehicle you go in through the seven gates, stop at each site for as long as it deserves, and leave when you are done rather than when someone else is.

The fort is busiest at weekends and on holidays, and quietest early on weekdays. It is about 240 km round trip; the car is yours for the day at one flat price for the vehicle.

Your day, stop by stop

1. Rana Kumbha Palace

The oldest palace on the hill, now roofless halls and courtyards near the main gate. It is where most of Chittor's history was lived, and where the guides start.

Fort entry ticket, bought once for the monuments

2. Meera and Kumbha Shyam temples

Two temples in one compound, the smaller tied to the poet-saint Meerabai, who lived at Chittor. Carved, calm, and usually busy with pilgrims as well as visitors.

3. Vijay Stambh

The tower of victory, nine storeys of carved stone raised by Rana Kumbha in the 1440s, and the picture everyone means when they say Chittor.

4. Gaumukh Kund

A spring-fed tank on the western edge of the fort, fed through a stone cow's mouth. Steps lead down to the water and fish rise when anyone appears with food.

5. Padmini's Palace

A pale three-storey palace beside a pool, at the heart of the Padmini legend. The story is told many ways; the building is real and the setting is lovely.

6. Kirti Stambh

The older and smaller tower of fame, a Jain monument from the twelfth century at the eastern side of the fort, with far fewer people than its neighbour.

Who this suits

Anyone interested in Rajput history or great ruins. With the car moving you between monuments, the walking is light, though the steps down to Gaumukh Kund are steep and can be skipped. The sedan seats four, the Sumo eight and the Innova six, each at one flat price for the car.

What to bring

A hat, sunscreen and water: the plateau has very little shade. Comfortable shoes, and cash for the ticket counter and a guide.

The plateau is hot from March

The day runs in heat and in rain; from April to June we suggest an early start and a long lunch. If roads close after heavy monsoon rain you get a full refund or a free reschedule.

Cancellation

  • More than 24 hrs before: Full refund
  • Within 24 hrs: 50% refund, or reschedule free once
  • No show: No refund

Safety and the operator

Run by a licensed local ground operator, one driver per vehicle, commercially registered and insured. Many of the fort's walls and tanks have no railing; keep children close at Gaumukh Kund and along the ramparts.

Questions

Is the price per person?

No. It is one price for the whole vehicle for the day. A Swift Dzire is ₹2,990 whether there are two of you or four.

Do we need a guide?

Not to get around, the driver knows the loop. Chittor's history is long and tangled, though, and a licensed guide from the gate makes the ruins make sense. It is paid locally and entirely optional.

Can we add Mount Abu to our Udaipur days?

Not as a day trip from us. It is about 165 km each way, and the Dilwara temples admit visitors only from around noon. That is seven or eight hours in the car for a few hours on the hill, and it is much better as an overnight.

Can we stay for the evening light and sound show?

Not on this booking; it would put you back in Udaipur late at night. If you want it, stay a night in Chittorgarh.
