The best Hoysala stonework in India, an hour from Chikmagalur
Belur and Halebidu are what Karnataka puts on its posters, and they deserve it. Both are Hoysala temples from the twelfth century, carved so densely that every horizontal band tells a different story: processions, hunts, battles from the Mahabharata, and rows of dancers with jewellery you could count the beads on.
They sit 30 to 40 km from Chikmagalur in the same direction, with Belavadi's quieter three-shrine temple on the way and the Yagachi reservoir just past Belur. Done in the right order, it is a comfortable nine-hour day. Done badly, it is a lot of doubling back on state highways.
Your car and driver take the whole loop, with a stop in town first at Hiremagalur, and finish at Yagachi where you can sit by the water or take a boat out before the drive home.

About 150 km on state highways with five stops. A car for the day at a fixed rate is simply the way this route works.
The right order matters
Belavadi and Halebidu before the midday buses, Belur when the light comes across the bracket figures, Yagachi last. Your driver knows the sequence.
Guides where they are worth it
The carvings reward a guide at Halebidu and Belur. Both temples have licensed ones at the gate; your driver will point you to them and you pay their posted rate.

1. Hiremagalur Temple
A Kodandarama temple in town, unusual for showing Sita to Rama's right. A short first stop before the drive out.
2. Belavadi Veeranarayana Temple
A three-shrine Hoysala temple that most tour buses skip, which is exactly why it is worth the detour. Often you will have it to yourselves.
3. Halebidu Hoysaleswara Temple
The Hoysala capital's great temple, carved along every surface with gods, battles, dancers and elephants. Eighty years of work, never finished.
4. Kedareshwara Temple, Halebidu
A smaller star-plan temple a short walk away, quieter and in some ways finer than its famous neighbour.
5. Belur Chennakeshava Temple
Still a working temple after nine hundred years. The bracket figures on the outer wall are the ones in every textbook.
6. Yagachi Dam
The reservoir behind Belur, with the hills stacked behind the water. The change of pace after a day of stone.
7. Yagachi backwater sports
Speedboats, jet skis and banana rides on the reservoir, run from the jetty. Optional and priced at the counter.

How you get there
One car, five stops, about 150 km
A Swift Dzire seats four, a Tata Sumo eight and an Innova or Ertiga six, each with a driver, for the whole loop. Everything on this route is reachable by car, so unlike the peak and Kemmangundi days there is no jeep segment to pay for.

Who this suits
The gentlest of the three Chikmagalur days: flat courtyards, no climbs, no jeeps. Good for older travellers and for families with small children. Temples ask for covered shoulders and knees, and shoes come off at the entrance.
What to bring
Socks for the hot stone courtyards at midday, sun protection, and cash for tickets and a guide. Modest dress for the temples.
A rain-proof day
This is the route that runs in any weather, which makes it the natural swap if the hills close. Only the Yagachi water sports stop is weather dependent, and it is optional anyway.

Licensed local drivers on highway routes they run regularly. Yagachi water sports are operated by the licensed jetty operator with jackets provided; we neither book nor take a cut of them.
Questions
Is a guide worth it?
At Halebidu and Belur, genuinely yes. The carvings are dense with narrative you will not spot alone. Licensed guides wait at both gates at a posted government rate.
The Sumo seats 8 but costs less than the 6-seat Innova. Why?
Because you are paying for two different things. The Sumo is built for capacity and rough road, so it is the cheapest way to move seven or eight people. The Innova is the smoother, quieter ride, which matters on ten hours of hill road. If you are a large group the Sumo is your option; if you are four to six and want the easier day, take the Innova.
Is the price per person?
No, it is for the whole car. Four in a Dzire pay ₹2,990 between them, not each.
Can we add Shravanabelagola?
Not comfortably in the same day; it is another 60 km on and 600-plus steps. Tell us at checkout if you want to try and the driver will give you an honest view on the morning.
Is photography allowed inside?
Outside yes, and the exteriors are the main event. Inner sanctums restrict it and some sites charge a camera fee at the counter.
