Wayanad's best walk is permit-gated. That is the whole game.
Chembra is the tallest peak in Wayanad, and halfway up it holds the heart-shaped lake that has become the district's postcard. The trek to the lake is a proper one: two to three hours up through tea and grassland, with the ghats unrolling behind you the entire way.
Here is what the postcard does not say: the forest department caps daily permits, issues them at the trailhead office in the morning, and turns away everyone after the cap. In season, people drive an hour, queue from before opening, and still miss out.
This booking is the version where none of that is your problem. Your permit is arranged in advance through a licensed local operator's daily allocation, your guide is mandatory anyway and ours is excellent, and your pickup is timed so you are climbing while the queue is still forming. You book the car for your group, so the price is the same for two of you or six.
Why book rather than chance it
The permit is the bottleneck
Daily numbers are capped and the queue starts before the office opens. Your permit is confirmed the evening before, or you are refunded in full.
A guide worth the rule
Guides are mandatory on Chembra. Ours knows the pace that gets everyone up, the weather windows, and where the views hide.
Door to trailhead to door, one price for the car
The trailhead is down 7 km of estate track. Your vehicle and the jeep transfer are included both ways, at a flat rate for the whole car. Only your meals are on you.
Where you'll go
1. The trailhead and permit office
Seven kilometres of estate track off the tar, then the forest department counter. Your permit is arranged in advance, so you get a briefing rather than a queue.
2. The tea rows
The first stretch climbs through working tea, with the ghats already unrolling behind you. Gentle enough to warm up on.
3. The grassland ridge
Above the tea the slope opens into bare grass and the three steep pitches begin. This is the part your legs will remember.
4. The heart-shaped lake
The postcard, and it holds up in person. About an hour here, and no swimming: that is a forest department rule enforced on the mountain.
5. The viewpoint above the lake
A short climb past the lake for the view that gets it in frame with the ghats behind. The summit beyond is closed for conservation.
How you get there
Car, then estate jeep, then boots
The trail starts inside tea estate land reached by a rough track. Your booking covers the whole vehicle from your stay, the estate jeep transfer to the trailhead, and both in reverse when your legs are done. The price is for the car, not per trekker.
- Pickup: Your stay around Kalpetta or Meppadi at 6:00 am
- Vehicle: Swift Dzire up to 4, Tata Sumo up to 8, or Innova / Ertiga up to 6, with driver
- Transfer: Estate jeep from the road to the trailhead, included both ways
- Trek: About 7 km round trip, 2 to 3 hours up, steep in parts
- Drop: Back by about 12:30 pm
The climb
6:00 am: Pickup
Early start, cool climb. This is deliberate.
6:45 am: Trailhead and permits
Your permit is waiting. Briefing, then off.
7:00 am: The ascent
Tea rows, then grassland, then the ridge. The views start immediately and do not stop.
9:30 am: The heart lake
An hour at the lake and the viewpoint above it. The summit beyond is closed to visitors; the lake is the prize.
12:30 pm: Drop
Down, jeep, cab, and back at your stay by lunch.

Who this suits
Moderate fitness required: it is a genuine 2 to 3 hour climb with steep sections. Children over 10 with walking habits manage it. Not suitable in pregnancy or with knee conditions that dislike descents. The car seats four or six depending on which you pick, at one price either way.
What to bring
Trekking or grippy shoes, 2 litres of water, sun protection, a light rain layer, and leech socks in the wet months. Plastic is banned on the trail and bags are checked.
The department decides
The forest department closes Chembra in heavy rain, high wind or fire season, occasionally on the morning itself. Any closure is a full refund or free reschedule, your choice. Permit not secured the evening before is an automatic full refund.

Safety and the operator
Guided in groups of maximum 8 with a first-aid trained lead. The lake is not for swimming, a forest department rule enforced on the mountain. Mobile coverage is patchy above the treeline; your emergency contact route is through the guide's radio phone.

Is the price per person?
No. It covers the car, the transfers, the permits and the guide for your group. Four of you pay what one would.
Can we reach the actual summit?
No, the stretch beyond the lake is closed for conservation. The lake and its viewpoint are what everyone climbs for.
How hard is it really?
A steady 2.5 hours up for a regular walker, with three steep pitches. The guide sets a pace with breaks, and slower is fine; the permit has no clock.
Why can it be cancelled the same morning?
The department closes the mountain for weather without notice. It is out of everyone's hands, which is why our policy is a full refund the moment it happens.
