The town that rebuilt itself, in about 80 km
Bhuj is the reason to give Kutch more than a sunset. It was the seat of the Jadeja rulers for four centuries, it was flattened by the 2001 earthquake, and what stands now is a mix of what survived, what was rebuilt and what was deliberately left cracked. Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal stand a courtyard apart and tell that story better than any museum.
The sights are close together but not walkable in the heat: this is about 80 km of short hops across the day, which is exactly what the local full-day rate covers. The order matters mainly for shade, and for getting to Chhatardi and Hamirsar when the light is worth having.
This is also the day that makes sense of the White Rann run. Kutch is a craft and trade region long before it is a salt desert, and the palaces are where that becomes obvious. You book the car, so a couple and a family of four pay the same.

Everything shuts in the middle of the day
Both palaces keep a long afternoon break and the temple has its own hours. A route built around them is the difference between five sights and two locked doors.
Short hops, brutal sun
Nothing here is more than a few kilometres apart, which tempts people into walking it. From March onwards that is a mistake. The car waits at every stop.
One flat price
The vehicle, the driver and about 80 km are agreed now, for the car rather than per head. Entry tickets and camera fees are paid at the counters, which we would rather tell you than hide.
Where you'll go
1. Swaminarayan Temple
The old temple came down in the 2001 earthquake and what stands now is carved white marble, finished over years. Start here, while the marble is still cool underfoot.
2. Aina Mahal
An eighteenth century palace of mirrored walls, Venetian glass and a room built around a fountain, made by a Kutchi craftsman who had trained in Europe. Earthquake damaged, partly restored, and all the more affecting for it.

3. Prag Mahal
Italian Gothic in the middle of Kutch, with a durbar hall and a clock tower you can climb for the best view of Bhuj there is. The cracks from 2001 have been left visible.

4. Chhatardi
The royal cenotaphs on the edge of town, badly hit by the earthquake and never fully rebuilt. Half ruin, half memorial, and usually empty. Best late in the afternoon.
5. Vande Mataram Memorial and Hamirsar Lake
A walk-through memorial on the way back in, then the lake the old town is built around, which fills from the desert catchment and is where Bhuj comes to sit at the end of the day.

How you get there
A sedan and a driver for the day
About 80 km in short hops around Bhuj, which is the standard local full day. The car stays with you at every stop, and the driver knows the afternoon closing times better than any posted board does.

9:00 am: Pickup
Straight to the temple while the marble is still cool.
9:20 am: Swaminarayan Temple
About 45 minutes. Shoes off, shoulders covered.
10:30 am: Aina Mahal
The mirrored hall and the fountain room. About an hour.
11:45 am: Prag Mahal
The durbar hall and the clock tower climb. About an hour.
1:00 pm: Lunch
A Kutchi thali at a place your driver would pick on his own day off.
2:30 pm: Chhatardi
The cenotaphs, usually to yourselves.
3:15 pm: Vande Mataram Memorial and Hamirsar Lake
The memorial, then the lake as the town comes out.
4:00 pm: Drop
Back at your stay.

Who this suits
Anyone comfortable with a few flights of old stairs. The clock tower at Prag Mahal is a steep climb and entirely optional. Children of any age are fine. Shoulders and knees covered at the temple, shoes off inside. Four seats, one flat price.
What to bring
A hat, sunblock, water, socks you do not mind walking a temple floor in, and cash for entry and camera counters, several of which do not take cards.
Heat is the only real variable
Rain is rare here and this route is largely indoors anyway. From April to June we start earlier and push Chhatardi and the lake later at no extra cost. A monument closed by an administrative order is a full refund or a free reschedule.

Safety and the operator
Licensed local ground operator, one driver per vehicle, air conditioned car. Parts of Aina Mahal and Chhatardi remain earthquake damaged and are fenced off for good reason; keep to the marked visitor areas and keep children off the loose masonry.
Questions
Is the price per person?
No. It is the price of the car for the day. Four of you pay ₹2,500 between you, not each.
Are entry tickets included?
No. Both palaces and the memorial sell their own tickets, with separate camera fees, and you pay them at the counters. The vehicle price is the vehicle.
Can we add the White Rann to this day?
Not properly. The Rann is 80 km each way, needs a permit at the checkpost and is only worth going for at sunset. It is the other experience here and it deserves its own afternoon.
Is a guide included?
No. This is the car, the driver and a route built around opening hours. Aina Mahal usually has a knowledgeable caretaker on site who is worth listening to, and you can tip him directly.
Do the palaces really close in the afternoon?
Yes, both keep a long midday break, and the exact hours move. That is precisely why the day is sequenced the way it is rather than left to chance.
