A day over the ghat to Vagamon, from Kumily and back

Vagamon is a high grassland of meadows, pine plantations and tea, about two hours north-west of Kumily over the Peermade and Elappara roads. It is quieter than Munnar, closer to Thekkady than most people think, and usually skipped by those who have not got a car for the day.

The day leaves Kumily at half past seven, stops at the rock at Parunthumpara on the way, and reaches Vagamon by mid-morning. The adventure park and the pine forest come first, the meadows next, and Kurisumala in the afternoon for anyone who wants to climb. Cloud tends to come over the tops from midday, so the best views are in the morning.

Getting to Vagamon by bus from Kumily means changes and an afternoon of waiting. The car is yours from your door at one flat price for the vehicle, and it waits at each stop.

Your day, stop by stop

1. Parunthumpara

A bare rock viewpoint just off the highway near Peermade, the first stop on the road out. Its name means eagle rock, and on a clear morning you can see a long way across the Idukki hills from it.

2. Kolahalamedu adventure park

The grass ridge where Vagamon's paragliding and the adventure park are. The cantilever glass bridge here has been closed for strengthening work through 2026; check before you count on it, because we will not promise it.

Park entry and each activity, paid at the counter

3. Vagamon pine forest

A plantation of tall pines on a slope, with a thick carpet of needles underfoot. Busy at weekends, almost silent at eleven on a weekday.

Entry ticket at the gate

4. Vagamon meadows

The rounded grass hills that Vagamon is known for, open and treeless, with walks in every direction. Cloud often comes over them from midday.

5. Kurisumala

The hill of the cross, with a path of crosses up to a chapel at the top and the Kurisumala ashram below it. The climb takes about an hour; the ashram's dairy farm is at the foot.

Who this suits

Anyone. The meadows and the pine forest are easy walking on grass and needles; Kurisumala is a real climb and entirely optional. The drive is two hours each way on winding roads. The sedan seats four, the Tata Sumo eight and the Innova six, each at one flat price for the car.

What to bring

A warm layer, it is cool and windy on the tops. Shoes with grip for the pine slope and Kurisumala, a rain jacket from June to November, and cash for the gates.

Cloud and rain on the tops

Cloud over the meadows is normal from midday and is not a cancellation. Paragliding and the adventure park close in rain and wind. If the ghat road is closed after heavy rain you get a full refund or a free reschedule.

Cancellation

  • More than 24 hrs before: Full refund
  • Within 24 hrs: 50% refund, or reschedule free once
  • No show: No refund

Safety and the operator

Run by a licensed local ground operator, one driver per vehicle, commercially registered and insured. The meadows have steep, slippery edges in the wet and no barriers. Adventure activities are run by the park's own staff, not by us; ask them about the conditions on the day.

Questions

Is the price per person?

No. It is one price for the whole vehicle for the day. Eight of you in the Tata Sumo pay ₹3,490 between you, not each.

Is the Vagamon glass bridge open?

It has been closed for most of 2026 for strengthening work, and reopening depends on the structure being tested and certified. We cannot promise it, and the rest of the day does not depend on it.

Can we do this from Munnar instead?

This day runs from Kumily. Munnar is farther from Vagamon, and our Munnar days are separate.

Can we drop at Vagamon instead of going back to Kumily?

Not on this booking, which is a return day. If you are moving on from Thekkady via Vagamon, ask us about a one-way transfer.
